Team Jewel's PledgePage

This October, two sisters, Leigh Cosby and Kristi Wall, will participate in the annual AVON Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. This is a very special and powerful event to help the fight against breast cancer.

We will be walking 60 miles from Lake Lanier to Piedmont Park in Atlanta with around 3000 other people to help raise money for breast cancer. The proceeds from this event fund the AVON Breast Cancer Crusade, an initiative to help the early detection and cure of Breast Cancer, especially focusing on medically underserved women.

We are both walking in this event for the first time for many reasons.

The first reason is the most personal to us. Our great grandmother, Jewel Baker (better known as "Mother Bake"), was personally affected by breast cancer some 25 years ago. This was a terribly trying time for her personally as well as for our family. Knowing how many women are lost to this disease, our family is very blessed to still have her with us. In fact, on July 14th, we gathered together to celebrate her 96th birthday!! In honor of her triumph, we have named our team "Team Jewel".

Another reason we have chosen to work so hard for this cause is because, according the American Cancer Society, over 182,000 women in the United States alone will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Over 40,000 will die. With breast cancer already detected in our family line, the risk to our grandmother, mother, aunts, cousins, the two of us and our daughters goes up substantially. Sadly, our cousin Melba Morvant lost her long battle with breast cancer three years ago.

Due to this walk we are a part of the determined and committed people who dedicate a part of their life to helping fight breast cancer. Many say that the AVON Breast Cancer 3-day Walk is a life changing event. We have both begun to truly understand the enormity of this disease and how to combat it. It has already been a life changing event for us personally. With luck the money we help raise through this event will change the lives of others too, by helping people living with breast cancer survive until eventually a cure is found. We hope to help change many lives for the better.

We would like for you to share this incredible adventure with us - by supporting us in our fundraising efforts. We have agreed to raise $3,800 by September 6th. Would you please consider making a fully tax-deductible donation to help us meet our goal?
